The New Spin on the Illegal War in Iraq
I cannot hold my tongue anymore! I've been good lately and refrained from ranting about anything political; especially about the illegal invasion of Iraq; a sovereign nation.
I find it interesting how the spin on the war in Iraq is changing. Politicians, political wags and hacks, military experts, and the new Iraq Study Group are espousing the new line that the Iraqis cannot have peace and democracy unless they are willing to stand up and take control of their own destiny. In other words, the obscene chaos in Iraq is their own fault and they have to take responsibility and stand up and fix it themselves.
Because of the new-speak, it is now the Iraqi's fault that one-hundred or more innocent souls are dying each and every day due to kidnappings and torture, assassinations and murder, suicide bombings, starvation and disease, and for having the misfortune of being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. The new spin makes it their fault that they cannot send their kids to school let alone leave the house lest they end up a grotesque statistic in an overcrowded morgue. The new verbiage makes it their fault that they don't have potable water, electricity, medical care, food, and security in their own country. The rewriting of history that is taking place right now, right under our noses, makes it their fault that their country is in the midst of a full-blown civil war.
I'm sorry! I don't see it that way! The mess that Iraq finds itself in is directly a result of the arrogance of a bunch of non-elected leaders who believe they can, through deceit and lies, impose their brand of democracy on any other nation that they see fit.
What I'm seeing now is a new lie being created that is preparing Americans for the day that they may have to pull out. This way, they can leave with honour. This way, they can justify the loss of three-thousand or more young men and women who served their country without question. This way, they can claim they didn’t lose the war; the Iraqi’s did. I pray that this will not happen because the Iraqi people will be left to fend for themselves in a quagmire of death that they never asked for.
There is no doubt that the rulers of Iraq were despots, but the fact is, the Iraqi people are worse off now than before. Oh! I forgot. They now have democracy. That justifies everything.
